Programs Offered

 

Our programs are designed to benefit students in grades K-8, and are meant for students at all academic levels and needs.  We provide a service to students from all schools and are situated on the Cerritos Elementary campus.  Our programs are offered Monday-Friday, beginning at 3:00pm, and we allow for flexible scheduling options.  We offer full supervision from 3:00pm until pick-up.  We welcome current and prospective parents to come in and observe our programs, and to meet our Tutors & Tutor Assistants.  All our programs are Tutor-led, and each Tutor has a number of Tutor Assistants (TA's) to provide ongoing support while working individually or in small groups with their student(s).

Homework Assistance Program

  • Students are placed in small group (1:2 to 1:4) or one-on-one homework assistance, based on individual needs.
  • Tutors and TA’s help students to prioritize, complete, understand and check homework assignments.
  • A variety of teaching techniques & styles are used, as appropriate, to teach students new concepts/topics, (e.g. examples, repetition, visual aids, analogies.)
  • TA’s work with Tutors to target concepts and subject areas to focus on for personal student success.
  • Upon completion of homework, students are provided with additional worksheets, activities and resources to continue individualized learning.
  • We also use school text books to ensure students have fully comprehended concepts learnt in class and know how to apply them to similar problems.
  • We will speak with students' teachers at school as required, to discuss students' specific needs.
  • Students build strong work ethics and develop disciplined study skills which entails a blend of independent study and team work.
 

 Subject Tutoring Program

  • Subjects offered are:  Reading..... Writing..... Math..... Science..... Social Science..... Literature..... History..... Whitney Preparation Test
  • We provide one-on-one or small group (1:2 to 1:4) single-subject tutoring  depending upon student needs.
  • Tutors conduct mini-lessons to introduce new or challenging topics, with the help of TA's who work alongside each student to guide them through their individual responses.
  • Tutors and TA’s help students complete and comprehend the exercises in their workbooks, checking and correcting as they go along.
  • A variety of teaching techniques & styles are used, as appropriate, to teach students new concepts/topics, (e.g. examples, repetition, visual aids, analogies.)
  • TA’s work with Tutors to target difficult concepts and focus on additional practice for personal student success.
  • Quality tutoring materials are obtained through Houghton Mifflin™, largely used in local schools.
  • We also use school text books to ensure students fully learn concepts in class and know how to apply them to similar problems.
  • We will speak with students' teachers at school as required, to discuss students' specific needs.
  • Students build strong work ethics and develop disciplined study skills which entails a blend of independent study and team work. 
 

 Reading For Fun Program

  • Students will read books of varying genres and authors that are grade-appropriate.
  • We will make an initial assessment as to the appropriate reading level for each student to determine which book to best place them on.
  • Students will read out aloud to the TA who will assist the student in their fluency of reading and to help students to decode challenging words.
  • TA's will lead a discussion so that students will learn to identify and then explore key story elements.  Frequent discussions will take place throughout the book.
  • Students will be required to retell what they read providing information on the main events as well as the details.
  • Students will write a book review on completion of each book, and if appropriate, provide a written response of their opinion and summary.  They will also learn how to make comparisons across books.
  • Students will be encouraged to participate in Reader's Theatre where they rehearse and then act out a character from a short story.
