Tutor Assistants

Background of Our TA's

Our Tutor Assistants (TA's) are exemplary and accomplished students from Cerritos and Whitney High Schools (generally 11th and 12th graders) and college undergraduates.  They are carefully selected on the basis of their GPA score, previous work experience, prior exposure to elementary-age students and participation in school clubs and activities  They have been recommended by a teacher from their current school.

The Role of our TA's

TA's are required to tutor the students under the guidance of our Tutors (certified teachers).  They tutor either 1:1 or within small group, depending upon the program they participate in.

Why High-School Students Make Perfect TA's!

In many ways, our TA's are perfectly suited to tutoring elementary and middle school students for a number of reasons:

1.  TA's are closer in age to the students they are tutoring, making it easier for students to open up to their TA when they experience difficulties with their work or do not comprehend the material.

2.  Students often look up to their TA as a mentor, which in turn, can have long-term positive effects on students' character development.

3.  TA's are very quick at checking students' work as they are accustomed to dealing with similar types problems at high school on a daily basis.

4.  Since it was not too long ago when TA's themselves were in the same grade as their student, it is easier for TA's to relate to the students and recall what experiences they had at that time period.

Overall, the TA's level of experience and stage of life complement the knowledge and experience provided by the Tutors.

Below are some profiles from selected TA's that have provided long-term support to students at Ready Study Go!  They have also included their personal experiences since working as a TA.

Michelle, TA   (Junior at Cerritos High School, GPA 4.0)

Michelle joined Ready Study Go! in March 2006, and since then has successfully provided tutoring to numerous students.  During the 2006-7 school year, one of her roles has been to assist a small group of 6th graders in the Homework Assistance Program. Michelle ensures that the concepts covered in the assignments are fully understood so that her students can apply what they learnt to subsequent problems.  In addition, Michelle has been instrumental in maintaining a well-disciplined group of students with strong study habits for their future success.

"I have been working at Ready Study Go! as a TA since March 2006 and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  I look forward to coming to work everyday because I love working with the children, most of whom I’ve known since I started.  I believe it’s really important to be a role model for these children in addition to helping them further their education.  With abundant resources provided by the program and the school, I’m able to help the students in an effective and positive way". ~ Michelle

Taylor, TA   (Sophomore at Whitney High School, GPA 4.0)

Taylor joined Ready Study Go! in April 2006.  He initially provided homework assistance to 4th graders, and subsequently transferred to the 6th grade homework group where he was able to make stronger use of his ability to teach more complex areas of elementary curriculum.  Taylor also provides 1:1 Language Arts and Math Tutoring to some of the 6th graders within his homework group.  By working simultaneously on the Homework Assistance and Subject Tutoring Programs, he is in a stronger position to determine his students' needs based upon difficulties encountered on homework assignments which he can address in more depth while working 1:1 with each of his students.  One of Taylor's 6th grade students, will be tutoring her peers this summer, having attended Ready Study Go! for a period of 2 years and observed her TA's tutoring skills.

"My experience tutoring at Ready Study Go! has been an extremely gratifying one. I really enjoy working with the kids, and believe that through this interaction, I build upon my own teaching methods and strategies. It has been to my great pleasure that I have been able to play a part in their academic development and growth throughout the school year." ~ Taylor

Kristine, TA   (Freshman at UC Irvine)

Kristine will be working in the Summer Tutoring Program, but previously tutored at Ready Study Go! during her final year at Whitney High School.  Kristine was amongst one of four TA's to work in the program when it first started in September 2005.  She has seen the company grow from scratch with a handful of students participating in one program, to a large number of enrollees from different schools, most of whom are enrolled in more than one of our several different programs.

Anannya, TA   (Freshman at Cal State Fullerton)

Anannya joined Ready Study Go! in January 2006.  Since then, she has tutored almost every grade level and participated in each of our different programs.  She recently acted as a mentor to fellow TA's starting out in our Subject Tutoring Program where she was able to share her experiences and make recommendations to new TA's starting out.  Anannya has a passion for helping children and fulfills this desire by providing tutoring to students in the program.

TA Training & Continuous Development

TA's participate in an extensive orientation upon joining Ready Study Go! which includes information about our educational materials, curricula and standards.  They not only familiarize themselves with Student Books and Teacher's Guides, but they learn about contrasting teaching styles and techniques used for each strategy, whether it be a pre-reading strategy (e.g. K-W-L charts) or a writing strategy such as expository writing.

TA's are also required to consult with Tutors, whether it be formally via a Tutor/TA Meeting, or informally after a tutoring session.  TA's operate under the continual guidance of the Tutors who are responsible for supporting TA's and providing advise regarding tutoring methods and styles.
