Answers:
Program Options
- Is the program only for students performing below grade level?
- No, the program has been designed for students of all academic levels and abilities. Students that are at or above grade level are also encouraged to enroll and will be given more challenging problems to work on.
- How do I know which program is best suited to my child?
- If you are unable to determine which program(s) is suitable for your child, we can advise you, based upon his/her teacher's recommendations together with exposing the student to grade-specific problems (diagnostic testing).
- How many programs should I select at one time?
- There is no limit to the number of programs you can select at one time. In fact, you should base your selection of the programs upon the needs of your child. If he/she is struggling in all academic areas and requires guidance in completing homework assignments, then you may want to consider enrolling your child in Homework Assistance, Language Arts Tutoring and Math Tutoring.
- Can I enroll my child in one program and then switch later on?
- Yes, you can always switch programs later on, or alter the schedule, as long as sufficient notice is provided.
Tuition
- Do I have to pay the full monthly fee if students are on vacation from school?
- We are closed on holidays and minimum days observed by Cerritos Elementary, at the request of the Principal. During months where there is no tutoring for a period of 5 days or more due to school holidays or minimum days, tuition will be pro-rated.
- Which program options are discounted?
- The discounts apply on the Subject Tutoring Program when you enroll your child in the Homework Assistance Program too. The more homework assistance days you enroll in, the bigger the discount on the Subject Tutoring Program. See Fee Schedule on the Tuition page, for discounted fees.
- What is the Registration and Materials Fee used for?
- They help towards the purchases made for materials, books and stationery. Even in the Homework Assistance Program, costs are incurred in purchasing practice workbooks at each grade level and subject area.
- If I leave the program, and later re-enroll, do I still have to pay the Registration and Materials Fee?
- Not if you re-enroll within 3 months of leaving the program. If the time elapsed has exceeded 3 months, then you would be required to pay the Registration and Materials Fees again.
- If I join Ready Study Go! towards the end of an academic year, do I have to pay Registration and Materials Fees again in the new academic year?
- No, if you enroll after Spring Break, you are not required to pay the Registration and Materials Fees again in September.
Timing of Enrollment
- Can I enroll my child in your program any time of the year?
- Yes, you may enroll your child in our programs at any time during the year. It is never too late to enroll!
- How many sessions per week should I enroll my child, per subject?
- This would depend upon the teacher's recommendation on how much additional tutoring your child needs. We recommend that you enroll in a minimum of 2 days per week per subject (regardless of grade level), and 2-5 days in the Homework Assistance Program, depending upon grade level and the amount of assistance needed to get through homework assignments.
- How would I know what duration to enroll my child for per session?
- This would generally depend upon your child's attention span. We recommend that 4th graders and above, enroll for 60 minute sessions per day, whereas primary graders limit each session to 45 minutes.
Feedback and Communication
- How would I know how my child is doing?
- There are many ways to find out how your child is doing. You can speak with your child's TA or Tutor, or you may ask the Director for feedback. You may also come in to observe your child's tutoring session in progress and look at their work in progress; we keep daily records of which assignments/topics students work on and how they performed on them.
- Do you provide regular feedack?
- Yes, we provide parents with an Evaluation Report at least twice a year, generally in November and April. The TA's and Tutors spend considerable time in constructing these as accurately as possible so that parents are kept well-informed of their child's progress. We also allow parents the opportunity to feedback to us about the program.
- When should I expect to see results?
- Exactly when, depends upon a number of factors, especially how quickly a child assimilates new concepts and learns to apply them. We have had parents report a significant improvement in as little as ONE month. Other students may take longer to learn and therefore, require several months before they see an improvment in grades. Learning requires time, and a student attending any program for a period of only 1.5-2 hours a week per subject, generally needs to stick at it for several months, before significant results are noticed.
Tutor and TA Interaction
- What happens if my child is not happy with their TA?
- We match our TA's with students based upon the strengths of the TA's, as well as the personality and study habits of the student. However, if a student is not comfortable with his/her TA, then we will assign him/her a different TA as soon as we can; sometimes immediately. We feel it is vital that the TA and student form a solid bond and work well together as this in turn, will yield stronger results.
- How can a TA successfully tutor when they are kids themselves?
- Though not teacher's themselves, TA's have a lot to offer. First, they are closer in age to the student they are tutoring, as compared with an adult, and therefore, the student is more likely to open up to the TA if they do not understand something, and be more honest about how they feel about something. Second, TA's are extremely quick at checking assignments and are knowledgeable about most topics as they are accustomed to working with these types of problems daily at school. In addition to these inherent skills, TA's receive an intensive orientation that covers everything from behavior management to applying different teaching techniques to various problems. TA's have periodic meetings with the Tutors where they exchange information and experiences. In fact, most students enjoy attending Ready Study Go! for the reason that they enjoy being engaged with their TA. We have found that students are often reluctant to leave our programs.
- What happens if my child's TA is absent or suddenly leaves Ready Study Go?
- If a student's TA is absent, we will organize a substitute TA to tutor your child. Usually, they are TA's that work regularly, but during different time sessions, and therefore, they are as familiar with our tutoring procedures and techniques as the student's regular TA. Also, we maintain a daily log of progress for each student; therefore, if a TA is absent, the substitute TA will be easily able to find information about what the student was working on and what areas need to be covered.
Homework Program
- Would my child complete all of his/her homework assignments during the Homework Program?
- Not necessarily. Primary graders are more likely to complete their homework than secondary graders due to the smaller volume of homework. How much each student accomplishes also depends upon how frequently they attend the homework program and the speed at which the student works. However, our philosophy is based upon quality rather than quantity, as long as the volume of homework a student accomplishes is reasonable. We are more concerned about how much of their assignment problems they actually understood and how much they will have retained in order to apply the same concept to a similar type of problem. If a student does not comprehend a topic or question, our TA's and/or Tutors will take the time to explain it to them until they feel confident that the student has mastered it.
- How would we know which assignments my child worked on?
- The TA or Tutor would initial in the top right corner of the page or assignment that has been corrected and worked on. If the student has not completed the assignment, we will place our initials where the student left off from.
- Do you provide help with deciding which assignments my child should focus on and in which order?
- Yes, many students need help on prioritizing. There is a natural tendency for students to work on topics that are easier for them to complete. However, we will advise them to work on areas that they need the most help on, based upon our knowledge and experience of them.
- Do you check homework assignments?
- Our TA's point out to their students which questions they missed and need to correct. Once all the problems have been answered correctly, the TA will initial the top right corner of the page to indicate they have fully completed that assignment. If an assignment has only been partially corrected or checked, then the TA will initial at the point they left off from. This system is intended to assist parents to understand which assignments do not need to be checked at home.
- Do you explain concepts and methods if my child doesn't understand a problem?
- Absolutely! If we did not, they may as well work on their homework assignments alone at home. We emphasize checking and correcting, and in doing so, we will explain and if need be, re-explain concepts or methods. If explaining it one way does not work, then we will use alternative methods. The Tutors intervene when a student is having continual difficulty understanding the concept or topic.
- What does my child do if he/she has completed all his/her homework assignments?
- We have a Worksheet Packet made up for every student in the Homework Assistance Program. Worksheets have been carefully and thoughtfully put together based upon the student's areas of difficulty (from our observations)or from the teacher's recommendation. These worksheets are checked and corrected in the same way that homework assignments are checked and corrected.
