NEW WRITING PROGRAM

Click above for further information.

The new writing program is meant for grades 3-8, though elements of the program could be used for primary grades. It has been designed around the WriteSource and Inside Writing publications of Great Source, a division of Houghton Mifflin, and focuses primarily on the process of writing, which includes the 5 steps, pre-write, write, revise, edit, publish. Students will learn to self-evaluate their essays against the 6 Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions), and subsequently make revisions to their own drafts, against each of these criteria. Students will be required to edit their essays for writing conventions (punctuation, capitalization, subect-verb agreements etc), with the aid of an editing checklist. Students will learn to differentiate between the varying forms of essay writing, such as narrative, expository, persuasive, etc., and learn how to compose each form of essay. The program has been designed and led by a 6th grade teacher from Stowers Elementary School with 15 years' of experience in elementary teaching. Our TAs will work with students in pairs or on a 1:1 basis.
